This is the collapsible-mount Summicron 50mm f/2, 1st generation, early version. Serial number in the 1,590,000 range, manufactured in 1958. Original product code: SOSIC-MS, later updated to 11818. Distance scale in feet. Minimum focusing distance: 1 meter.
It features a modified Gauss-type optical design with 7 elements in 6 groups. Designed with an emphasis on contrast, it also offers excellent resolution—earning it a reputation as one of Leica’s legendary lenses.
The Summicron remains a flagship lens in Leica’s lineup to this day, but this first-generation version—with its high-quality chrome finish and elegant form—continues to enjoy enduring popularity. It’s a true classic among vintage lenses: beautiful to look at and a joy to shoot with. It pairs wonderfully with any M-mount body.
Filter size: E39. Compatible hoods include ITDOO and IROOA.
This lens, previously sold by our store, has returned once again. It was carefully used by the previous owner and remains in the same very clean condition as when last sold. There is a minor scuff near the aperture ring, but the silver paint on the helicoid, which is often prone to wear, is still well preserved.
Although it was fully overhauled in 2023, we performed additional maintenance in May 2025 prior to this resale, including element cleaning and helicoid servicing. Both the aperture ring and helicoid now operate smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is precise, and focus is spot on.
There is a faint hairline mark on the front element and some coating deterioration on both the front and rear elements, but the lens still delivers the characteristic rendering of the collapsible Summicron. The coating remains intact across the surfaces, and the lens retains its classic Summicron performance.
