※About rarity

Chrome barrel Elmar 50mm f3.5. Leitz product code is ELMAR. Serial number falls in the 860,000 range, manufactured in 1951. Coated lens. Optical design consists of 3 groups and 4 elements. Accepts A36 filters. Distance scale is marked in feet.

The Elmar 50mm f3.5 with A36 diameter was produced for over 30 years, dating back to the Leica Model A era. This particular unit was made just before the appearance of the red Elmar, and features a soft purple coating.

This lens represents the quintessential standard lens of Leica. The appropriate original hood is the FISON, but it is also compatible with our store-original Elmar hood FB-07, which allows aperture control.

This lens has a remarkably clean exterior with virtually no signs of use. Even the collapsible barrel shows no signs of rubbing. Although the collapsible Elmar is often referred to as a standard lens that every Leica owner possesses, it is rare to find one in such beautiful condition.

It underwent a full overhaul in July 2025. Both the aperture and helicoid movements are exceptionally smooth, offering a pleasing tactile feel. The interior surfaces have been carefully recoated with matte lacquer to reduce internal reflections, enhancing image contrast and clarity.

On the optical side, there are 2–3 faint cleaning marks on the front element. Additionally, some mild coating deterioration is visible as a very light haze, but this should not affect image quality. The results from test shooting were also excellent.

An ideal companion for a clean Barnack Leica.
