Elmar 50mm f3.5, commonly known as the Red Elmar due to its red-colored depth of field scale. Leitz product code: ELMAR. Serial number in the 1.42 million range, manufactured in 1956. Optical construction consists of 3 groups and 4 elements. Filter size: A36.
This is the final version of the Elmar 50mm f3.5 with A36 diameter, a lens that had been in production for over 30 years since the Leica Model A era. The distance scale on the helicoid is in meters.
As the ultimate evolution of the A36 Elmar, it boasts exceptional build quality, a solid barrel feel, and finely textured chrome finish—testament to its high level of refinement.
The matching genuine Leitz hood is the FISON. Our original Elmar hood with aperture control, the FB-07, also makes a great companion.
There are very faint scuff marks on the nameplate and slight wear on the collapsible section, but aside from that, signs of use are minimal, and the matte chrome finish retains a beautiful appearance.
Fully overhauled in June 2025. Thanks to the meticulous servicing, both the aperture and helicoid offer an exceptionally smooth feel. The internal anti-reflection matte lacquer has also been carefully reapplied, promising even tighter rendering performance.
There are only a few very light cleaning marks on the front and rear elements, but no haze or fungus residue is visible. The glass is strikingly clear. Test shots also showed excellent results.
Comes with an original front cap.
