Tele-Elmarit 90mm f/2.8, early version. Leitz product code: 11800. Serial number in the 2,060,000 range, manufactured in 1964. Designed by Leitz Canada, featuring a 5-element, 5-group optical construction. This short telephoto lens offers a compact form factor reminiscent of the early Summilux 50mm f/1.4, making it pleasantly portable like a standard lens.

This particular piece is the rarer early chrome barrel version. As expected from Leitz’s golden postwar era, its finely crafted, high-cost build is a joy to behold.

At wide open apertures, it delivers a gentle softness to the image, while stopping down results in rich, high-contrast rendering. With minimal distortion, this 90mm lens excels not only in portraiture but also in product photography—perfect for capturing cars, motorcycles, and more.

The knurled portion of the helicoid shows some light scuffing and minor scratches from use, but overall, the chrome finish remains beautiful and the lens presents a well-preserved appearance.

Fully overhauled in May 2025. The aperture and helicoid operate very smoothly, and the rangefinder coupling is spot-on. Focus snaps in confidently even at maximum aperture, offering peace of mind during shooting. The internal anti-reflective matte black lacquer has also been carefully reapplied, contributing to a tighter, more controlled rendering.

The glass is in good condition—clear and free from haze or cleaning marks. There is only minimal degradation to the coating, which has virtually no impact on real-world shooting.

When mounted on chrome M bodies such as the M3, M2, or M4, it looks exceptionally elegant. This is a lens in its prime—both collectible and fully practical for everyday use.
