Wide-angle lens made by P. Angénieux, France. 35mm f2.5 Type R1, late version, Exakta mount. The Type R1 was introduced in 1950, and this particular piece was manufactured in 1957. Distance scale is in feet, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.9m. Equipped with a manual preset aperture mechanism.
It features a retrofocus optical design with 5 groups and 6 elements, delivering the gentle, elegant rendering characteristic of Angénieux lenses. While originally made for Exakta and Topcon bodies, it can also be enjoyed on modern mirrorless digital cameras via an adapter.
The late Type R1 models are distinguished by their fine matte chrome bands on the aperture and focusing rings, giving the lens a refined and stylish appearance. It looks stunning when mounted on a camera.
There are some small areas of paint loss on the front edge of the barrel, but overall it has a very clean appearance, close to excellent condition. Fully overhauled in September 2025. Although Angénieux lenses often suffer from loose or wobbly aperture and helicoid operation, this one has been carefully serviced and now operates with a precision feel that is quite exceptional. The front element shows numerous cleaning marks, but when viewed under LED light from the rear element side, these marks are barely visible and should have little effect on actual photography. Test shots produced excellent results. In our experience, many Angénieux wide-angle lenses deliver fine images even with cleaning marks or coating wear. Sample images are available in our gallery. Even when shooting toward light sources, the lens retains good contrast. Recommended for practical use.
