This is an extremely rare early model of the Leica M4 Black Paint series, known as the No-Notch version. Serial number: 1181xxx.
This particular unit belongs to the very first batch of 500 black paint M4 cameras, which began with serial number 1181501 in July 1967.

It is said that this first batch was primarily supplied to professionals and insiders, and many of these cameras were used by renowned photojournalists and photographers.

Among that first batch, this example is especially rare—it features painted brass screws instead of the later notched-type (notched or slotted) screws on the self-timer and frame selector, giving rise to the nickname No-Notch.
Production numbers of this No-Notch variant are believed to be extremely limited, estimated at no more than 50 units, and only a handful have been confirmed within a specific serial range.

The previous owner of this camera reportedly admired the No-Notch M4 owned by Akihiko Okamura, which was featured in a magazine, and spent many years searching for the same model.
After decades, this very unit left the previous owner’s hands in 2023 and returned to us—an honor we deeply appreciate.

A true rarity.

This camera remains in fully original condition, including the vulcanite covering.
The natural wear on the black paint, along with the subtle bubbling around the top cover and film advance lever, is reminiscent of the M2 and M3 black paint era—beautifully aged with an authentic, professional character. It has a sharp, purposeful presence.

There is a very faint ding on the corner of the top cover near the serial number, but it’s hardly noticeable. Overall, the camera gives the impression of having been used with great care and respect.

In 2023, it underwent a meticulous full overhaul down to the smallest details. For this resale, the shutter has been serviced again, including a curtain replacement.
The viewfinder is clear and crisp, and the shutter and all other mechanisms function perfectly.
