Lens Hood for Elmar 50mm f/3.5 by Wallace Heaton, London
This lens hood allows for aperture operation while mounted—compatible even with the engraved aperture scale of prewar Elmars.
The aperture values are displayed in the continental system (3.5, 4.5, 6.3, 9, 12.5, 18). Made of aluminum, it is lightweight at approximately 19g (measured).
To mount, loosen the screw at the base, slide the hood onto the front of the lens, align the aperture scale with the indicator, and then tighten the screw to secure it in place.
Wallace Heaton Ltd. was established in 1917 in London. Originally a pharmacy, the company later transitioned into a camera retailer.
They operated a prestigious store on New Bond Street, one of London's most exclusive areas, and held a Royal Warrant, serving as an official supplier to the royal family.
Wallace Heaton remained independently operated until its acquisition in 1972, and also sold private-label products under its own name—this hood being one example.
During past sourcing trips to the UK, I often came across cameras and lenses accompanied by original Wallace Heaton receipts or warranty cards. These encounters not only evoked the legacy of this distinguished royal-appointed camera shop, but also impressed upon me the British tradition of careful ownership and preservation.
There are some scuffs and minor aluminum oxidation from use, but the hood retains an attractive, well-aged appearance.
No dents or distortions are present. All functions operate properly.
Mounting has been confirmed on a prewar Elmar 5cm lens.
