Summar 50mm f2. Serial number in the 440,000 range, manufactured in 1938. Leitz code is SUMUS. Features a hexagonal aperture and what appears to be a later Leitz-applied coating. The aperture scale follows continental markings (f2, 2.2, 3.2–), and the helicoid is marked in meters.
This classic Leica standard lens offers rich bokeh and natural vignetting typical of the double-Gauss design. At full aperture, it renders soft and atmospheric images, while stopping down increases sharpness while preserving some of the softness.
This particular lens has excellent glass condition, and thanks to the coating, delivers stable and reliable performance. It uses A36-size filters. The appropriate original Leitz hood is the SOOMP.
This is one of our previously sold items that has returned to us after being carefully used by the customer.
While minor scuff marks can be seen on the exterior, it is in remarkably clean condition for a Summar lens, which is often found heavily worn. The chrome finish retains its beautiful luster without the usual peeling at the front or base.
A full overhaul including focus calibration was completed in 2023, and for this resale, the glass was cleaned again in June 2025. Thanks to meticulous servicing, both the aperture and helicoid operate extremely smoothly, offering a stress-free and pleasant handling experience. Rangefinder coupling and focusing are both accurate. The interior matte black anti-reflective lacquer has been carefully reapplied, enhancing image contrast.
The lens shows slight yellowing of the glass but almost no cleaning marks, making it quite clean for a Summar, which tends to be prone to scratches. The coating remains well-preserved, allowing for images with solid contrast. It also performs relatively well against backlight. Test results from actual shooting were excellent.
Comes with an original front cap.
