Tele-Elmarit 90mm f/2.8 Early Version. Leitz product code: 11800. Serial number: 2,070,000 range, manufactured in 1964, the same year as the Tokyo Olympics. It was also the year the Tōkaidō Shinkansen was inaugurated, and the Porsche 911 was launched, capable of reaching 200 km/h—just like the Shinkansen. Globally, it was an era of accelerating economic and technological growth.
This lens is a 5-element, 5-group design by Leitz Canada, offering a compact medium telephoto focal length, similar in size to a standard lens like the Summilux 50mm f/1.4 early version.
This particular unit is the early chrome version, a relatively rare model. As part of Leitz's post-war golden era, the lens boasts a refined appearance, reflecting the significant resources invested in its construction—a truly beautiful design. It also comes with a gorgeous chrome-plated rear cap specifically made for this lens, which is well-known.
The compatible lens hood is either IUFOO or 12575.
At wide open, the lens delivers moderate softness in the rendering, and when stopped down, it produces high contrast with rich, vibrant images. With minimal distortion, the 90mm focal length makes this lens ideal not only for portraiture but also for shooting cars, motorcycles, and more.
There are slight scratches and scuffs on the aperture and helicoid rings, showing minor signs of use, but the overall appearance is still in relatively good condition.
It underwent a full overhaul in 2022. Thanks to the careful servicing, the lens still operates smoothly in all aspects. The rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned.
There are a few minor traces of fungus on the edge of the rear element (about 3-4 spots), but these should not have any noticeable effect on image quality. There are no wipe marks or haze present.
The lens comes with original front and rear caps.
