※About rarity

W-Nikkor·C 35mm f3.5 by Nippon Kogaku. Engraved with serial number 612 and marked Nippon Kogaku Tokyo. A discreet Made in Occupied Japan (MIOJ) engraving is found around the rear element, indicating production during the Allied occupation of Japan.

This very first version bearing the 612 test serial prefix was produced around the launch of the Nikon I, with only about 125 units reportedly made. This particular lens is said to be the 105th supplied unit. Manufactured in 1948. At the time of the Nikon I debut, five lenses were introduced: 35mm f3.5, 50mm f2 and f3.5, 85mm f2, and 135mm f4.

The lens design follows a Tessar-type configuration with 3 groups and 4 elements. It features an early, lightly coated surface. The minimum aperture is f16, and the closest focusing distance is 3 feet, marked in feet. The lens alone weighs 187 grams.

A notable feature of this early model is that the aperture ring rotates in the opposite direction compared to standard Nikkor lenses, a rare characteristic found only in the earliest production.

The item shows only minimal signs of use and is in very good cosmetic condition with no noticeable scratches.
Fully overhauled in June 2025. The aperture and helicoid now operate smoothly with a refined, well-damped feel. The rangefinder coupling is accurate.
There is slight separation in the middle element and some coating deterioration near the edge of the front element. However, the coating on all surfaces remains largely intact, and the center of the glass is clear and haze-free.
The included front and rear caps are period-correct, made of thick metal with a matte chrome finish that gives them a solid, weighty feel.
A rare find.
