※About rarity

Summaron 28mm f5.6, commonly known as the Red Summaron. It is one stop brighter than its predecessor, the Hektor 28mm f6.3. This particular lens was manufactured in 1958, with a serial number in the 1.55 million range. The Leitz product code is SNOOX, and the distance scale is in meters. The lens construction consists of a Gauss-type design with 4 groups and 6 elements.

Introduced in 1955 as the successor to the Hektor 28mm f6.3, the Summaron was produced until 1963. The filter diameter remains the same as the Hektor 28mm, using a 36mm slip-on filter (A36). This lens was manufactured during the golden era of post-war Leitz, alongside the release of legendary cameras like the Leica M3, MP, and M2. Not only does it deliver exceptional image quality, but its high-quality chrome finish and timeless design—still looking fresh nearly 70 years later—continue to make it highly sought after.

Additionally, when paired with its dedicated square hood (SOOBK), the lens takes on an incredibly stylish appearance, embodying the refined aesthetics of Leica products from this era.

In recent years, an unexpected reissue of this lens caused quite a stir, but the original remains relatively scarce, and finding one in pristine condition is becoming increasingly difficult.

There are no noticeable scratches, dents, or marks, and the exterior is in excellent condition. The chrome plating on the mount surface is still shiny.

The lens underwent a full overhaul in March 2025. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the helicoid operates very smoothly, and the aperture ring turns effortlessly. The rangefinder coupling is precise, and focusing is excellent.

The glass has a slight balsam separation at the edge of an internal element and a very faint hairline on the rear element, but these have no impact on image quality. For a Red Summaron, which is often known for clouded elements, this one has remarkably clean optics.

Test shots yielded excellent results. Sample images have been uploaded to the test gallery, and we would be delighted if you could take a look.
