Canon FD 55mm f/1.2 AL
Released in March 1971, this was Canon’s first lens to feature an aspherical element. Launched alongside the flagship F-1 and mass-market FTb, it also introduced a floating element system for improved correction of aberrations at close distances. Compared to the standard FD 55mm f/1.2 (spherical version) of the time, this aspherical model was priced nearly four times higher.
The optical design consists of 8 elements in 6 groups.
The lens incorporates radioactive glass, resulting in noticeable yellowing. Even a simple Geiger counter can detect elevated radiation levels.
Minimum focusing distance is 0.6m, and the filter thread size is 58mm.
This particular unit features the early-style blue AL (Aspherical Lens) engraving, indicating it is likely from one of the earliest production batches. The serial number is also quite low at 143xx.
A beautifully preserved example, carefully kept by a collector — truly in near-mint condition.
Shows no signs of use. The black paint and metal finishes retain their original luster, making this a superb candidate for any collection.
All functions operate properly.
The glass shows no noticeable scratches or haze. Under a loupe, you may find a few extremely faint cleaning marks, and under strong LED light, a very slight coating deterioration can be seen near the edge of an inner element — both are minimal and should have no impact on actual image quality.
Includes the original UV filter, dedicated front cap marked AL, and rear cap.
