An exceptionally beautiful Nikon S late version set from Nippon Kogaku. This is the model that laid the foundation leading to the Nikon F. Competing with Leica and Contax, the Nikon S series introduced highly precise bodies along with a wide variety of lenses and accessories, ultimately passing the baton to the Nikon F, a true milestone in camera history.
This example carries a serial number in the 61285xx range. Since the final serials are said to reach 61295xx, this one falls very close to the last batch. It was likely produced around 1953 to 1954.
The included lens is the Nikkor 50mm f1.4. Its classic white barrel pairs beautifully with the Nikon S. Matching the body, it is also in exceptionally fine condition.
The late version is highly refined, with quality on par with the later S2, SP, and S3 models. It is a piece that conveys the origins of Made in Japan, which would go on to take the world by storm.
The original box is the dark blue flocked type with gold lines, appropriate for the era. Having been stored for many years inside the included cardboard outer box, it appears to have been shielded from ultraviolet light, leaving the blue color and gold embossing remarkably intact and giving the box a refreshing appearance. The bottom of the inner box also bears a stamp indicating that the f1.4 lens was originally included as part of the set.
Both the body and lens are exceptionally clean. There is a slight ripple in the covering on the back of the body, but there are no signs that a strap was ever attached, and there is essentially no trace of use. It makes sense, as this set was reportedly kept in long-term storage by a well-established camera shop that never sold it when new, after which it was owned and carefully preserved by a collector.
In 2025, both the body and lens received their first overhaul since new, bringing them back to a refreshed state. All operations are now very smooth, allowing you to fully appreciate the appeal of the Nikon S, whose build quality remains impressive even by modern standards.
The lens shows a touch of haze around the edge of the middle element and a slight trace of balsam separation along the rear element periphery, but it still maintains very good glass condition. No visible cleaning marks can be seen.
The original box, English manual, leather case, and other accessories are included. The beauty of the original box alone is something worth noting. Among all the S-type sets we have seen, this one stands out as truly exceptional. Examples like this simply do not appear on the market. A rare and remarkable set.
