A Nikon S2 with a serial number in the 620xxxx range, an exceptionally rare example, as this serial-number range was normally reserved for the Nikon SP. An EP mark is engraved on the rewind crank.
According to The Complete Nikon Rangefinder System—the renowned reference book by noted Nikon collector Robert Rotoloni, only four surviving examples are known to exist (!!): 6205001, 6205006, 6205010, and 6205019. This camera bears the earliest serial number of the four.
As an early-production Nikon S2, it should ordinarily have been engraved with a serial number in the 613xxxx range. Yet, rather mysteriously, a handful of S2 cameras bearing 620xxxx range serial numbers are known to exist.
One theory holds that these 620xxxx series Nikon S2 cameras were manufactured in 1961.
Although regular production of the S2 ended in June 1958, it is believed that, following the start of SP production, Nikon produced only a few dozen additional S2 cameras using a small stock of remaining parts, in response to requests from U.S. military officers.
These cameras are thought to have been supplied primarily through J.C.E. (a U.S. military Post Exchange concessionaire) and Navy channels handled by Orient Trading Co. This would explain the EP engraving on the rewind crank, indicating that the camera was sold tax-free. The EP mark is believed to have come into use in July 1960, which is also consistent with the theory that these cameras were manufactured in 1961.
A true rarity.

There is a small ding just below the screw near the rangefinder control dial, along with a few very minor scuffs on the top cover and base plate. Otherwise, there are no noticeable scratches or wear. This is a very clean example for a Nikon S2.

It received a full overhaul in June 2026. Film advance is smooth, the finder view is clear, and the rangefinder patch has strong contrast.

A somewhat rare original Nikon aluminum body cap is included.
