Nikkor-S.C 5cm f1.4, Leica screw mount. This example is the later version with a black-painted aperture ring, commonly called the black band. Distance scale in feet.
It was supplied for domestic Leica copies such as Leotax. The optical construction is the same as the 50mm f1.4 made for Nikon S rangefinders.
The coupled focusing range goes down to about 3.5 feet (around 1 meter). Beyond that, by extending the helicoid further, close focusing is possible from about 3.5 feet down to the minimum of 1.5 feet (about 45 cm). In this close range, the lens is not coupled to the rangefinder, so it requires scale focusing or use with live view. In the digital era, this feature makes it surprisingly practical and enjoyable to use.

There are some minor scuffs visible on the base and tip of the barrel as well as on the helicoid, but no dings or dents, and the overall appearance is fairly clean. Fully overhauled in September 2025, including focus adjustment. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture and helicoid operate with a very smooth feel, and rangefinder coupling is accurate.
On the lens, there are two extremely fine hairline marks on the front element, a very slight coating deterioration on the rear element, and the characteristic slight balsam separation along the edge of the middle elements typical of the Nikkor 50mm f1.4, but none of these have any noticeable effect on actual photography. There are no fungus traces or haze, and the glass is clear and bright. Test shots also produced excellent results.
Wide open, the lens delivers a rather soft rendering with flare, while stopping down two to three stops brings a sharp transformation, allowing the photographer to enjoy the contrast in character.
