※About rarity

Leica Nokton 50mm f1.5 – Leica Screw Mount. Manufactured by Voigtländer, this particular example is a mid-to-late production model with serial number 327xxxx, dating from 1951. The lens was designed by Dr. Tronnier, the same optical engineer behind the Xenon 50mm f1.5. It features a 5-group, 7-element optical formula, distance scale in feet, and weighs 339g as measured.

While the Nokton 50mm f1.5 is best known in its Prominent mount version from the early 1950s, a small number were also produced in Leica LTM (L39) screw mount, making them particularly rare. Other rare variants exist, such as those for the Contax mount and the Rectaflex, although they differ slightly in optical design.

As a side note, Voigtländer also produced original LTM versions of the Color-Skopar 50mm f3.5 and Ultron 50mm f2, similar to the Prominent standard lens lineup.

Among the many non-Leitz lenses ever made for Leica, the Leica-mount Nokton stands out for both its elegant design and exceptional rendering. Despite its short production period, it exists in at least eight known variants, with no strict correlation between serial number progression and design changes—adding to its mystique.

This specimen features a single black ring, a coating that shifts between purple and amber hues, and a black engraved name ring. Notably, in this serial range, some examples also appear with chrome name rings, further complicating categorization.

Its design pairs beautifully with both Barnack and M-type Leica bodies, and its rendering is as graceful as its styling. This is a rare and truly desirable collector’s gem.

There are minor scratches and light scuffs on the plated areas due to normal use, but overall the exterior remains in beautiful condition.
The lens underwent a full overhaul in June 2025, including focus calibration and rangefinder coupling adjustment. The aperture and helicoid operate with a well-balanced torque, providing a satisfying tactile feel. Rangefinder coupling is precise, and focus snaps accurately even at full aperture—truly a superb finish.
The front element shows very faint cleaning marks and slight scuffing, and there is a minor separation along the edge of the middle element—known as a common issue with Noktons—but none of these affect image quality. Actual test results were excellent.
