Leica M3, early model. Serial number 703xxx. Manufactured in 1954, the first year of the M3’s release, and part of the 1st production lot. As expected, it features the early “big ear” double stroke and no frame selector. The tripod socket is the small screw type.
Although this example is not the stepped version (stepped and non-stepped types are mixed from single-digit serial numbers onward), it retains the key characteristics of an early M3 in original condition.
Details include the flathead screw fastening on the top plate, a flathead screw at the 12 o’clock position on the mount (even earlier examples have none), an angular back door rated up to ASA 200, a pink-tinted indicator, glass pressure plate, half-moon stopper on the accessory shoe, and a rewind knob with a flat line on the center shaft, among others. A truly feature-rich piece.
Like the early Leica Model A, the early M3 becomes more fascinating the deeper you study it. Stepped models and double-digit serial numbers are financially quite intense, but with a four-digit number like this, it becomes far more attainable. An excellent choice for those who love early-production models.

There is a scratch next to the shutter dial, several light scuffs on the top cover, and somewhat more noticeable scuffing on the base plate, but no dents or dings, making this a rather clean example. The vulcanite on the back door shows some minor repair marks, but aside from that, including the exterior parts, it retains the original appearance of an early M3. Overhauled in August 2025, with smooth operation throughout thanks to careful servicing. The rangefinder patch shows a few small spots caused by balsam separation, but this does not interfere with focusing accuracy. A well-suited early M3 body for practical use. Comes with a genuine body cap.
