Nikon S2 Black Paint – Early Type (Serial No. 61709xx)
This is the early version of the Nikon S2 in black paint finish. Compared to the later black paint S2, which features more chrome parts, the earlier type boasts a greater proportion of black-painted components—making the black paint all the more striking and desirable. It has an impressively bold and refined appearance.
Details like the shutter speed dial and sync selector—both fully finished in matte black, even on the edges—are especially captivating and speak to the distinct character of this model.
The included black paint Nikkor 5cm f/1.4 lens is from the first batch, serial number 3312xx, which predates the S2 slightly. This lens series is extremely rare and is believed to have been originally paired with early Nikon S black paint bodies, making it a particularly valuable piece from an earlier era.
Like Leica, Nikon also produced a small number of black paint models in their S-series lineup—but the early S2 black paint stands out as one of the most striking. This particular example retains its original parts and finish, offering a truly impressive presence.
This is a beautifully balanced example with just the right amount of wear, giving it the cool, professional presence one would expect from a serious tool. The body and lens complement each other exceptionally well in terms of both aesthetics and condition.
There is a minor ding between the shutter speed dial and accessory shoe on the top cover, along with two small dings on the base plate. In addition, typical wear to the black paint is visible on edges and other areas from regular use.
Both the body and lens were overhauled in April 2025. Each component now offers a smooth and satisfying tactile feel. Film advance and shutter action are both light and fluid. The viewfinder is bright and clear, with strong contrast in the rangefinder patch.
The front element of the lens shows a number of cleaning marks, but test results were very good overall.
Comes with the original front cap and a rare 43mm black-rimmed Nikon L37C filter.
A rare and remarkable set.
