The Sonnar 85mm f/2 is a renowned medium telephoto lens manufactured by Carl Zeiss for the Contarex mount.
This particular example features an all-black finish, including the helicoid ring band.
Introduced in 1958, a total of 7,585 units were produced by 1973.
It features an optical construction of 7 elements in 3 groups.
The minimum focusing distance is 80 cm.
Packed with heavy glass elements, the measured weight of the lens is approximately 383g.
There are slight scuff marks on the helicoid ring and some mild fading on the distance scale below it.
Otherwise, the lens shows very little sign of use and maintains a clean overall appearance.
All functions operate properly.
The helicoid action feels slightly firm, but remains within an acceptable range.
The front element shows minor wiping marks and slight coating deterioration, while the periphery of the inner elements reveals faint haze that is only visible under strong LED light.
However, none of these issues are expected to affect actual shooting performance.
The center of the glass is clear and crisp, and shooting tests produced excellent results.
The original front and rear caps are included.
