Summicron 50mm f2, 2nd generation early transitional model. Serial number falls in the 2.26 million range, manufactured in 1968. This rare version uniquely combines the newly designed 6-element, 5-group optical formula of the 2nd generation with the body of the 1st generation lens. In recent years, it has been referred to as the Transitional Model overseas. The Leitz product code is 11817, same as the standard 6-element 2nd generation models that followed shortly after.
From the Leica Model A to the M3, and from the earliest Summicron and Summilux 35 and 50mm to the Noctilux f1.2, and more recently the APO-Summicron 50mm, Leica’s early production runs have always stood out with exceptional build quality, thoughtful design, and outstanding performance. This earliest version of the 6-element lens is no exception—it truly reflects Leitz’s commitment to excellence.
It inherits the clean, well-balanced design of the late 1st generation and looks excellent on both black chrome and black paint Leica bodies—especially fitting for black paint M4s from 1968 in the 1.18 or 1.20 million serial range.
This transitional model has long been praised for its outstanding performance, and this particular lens lives up to that reputation. It delivers remarkably sharp and pleasing results.
A rare and desirable piece.
This lens appears to have been well-used and loved over the years, with some paint wear on the helicoid and aperture ring from handling. However, there are no signs of impact or dents.
It underwent a full overhaul in June 2025, resulting in a very smooth operational feel throughout. The aperture ring, which can often become loose or wobbly, now moves with satisfying precision.
The front element shows a few extremely faint cleaning marks, while the rear has a minor point-like spot of coating wear. There are no noticeable scratches or haze, and the glass remains bright and clear. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on. From wide open, the lens delivers crisp, contrast-rich rendering—so sharp, it could almost be mistaken for an APO-Summicron.
This early transitional 2nd generation Summicron, housed in a 1st gen barrel, has consistently impressed us with its exceptional optical performance—and this example is no exception. The rangefinder coupling is excellent, and it focuses confidently down to the minimum distance of 0.7 meters.
Shooting results were outstanding. Please take a look at our sample images in the gallery—all were taken at maximum aperture. The lens delivers razor-sharp resolution and beautiful color rendition, making it a joy to shoot with.
Includes a third-party front cap and an original rear cap.
