※About rarity

The Elmarit 28mm f/2.8 early model, commonly known as the 9-element version, is a highly sought-after lens, especially in the red scale version. Made in Germany, it is identified by the Leica product code 11801 and has a serial number in the 2,060,000 range, manufactured in 1964. It features a 6-group, 9-element non-retrofocus design.

With its elegantly tapered form, striking red lettering, and smooth infinity stopper, this lens stands out as one of the most popular in the Elmarit 28mm series, known for its textured rendering and soft, beautiful bokeh.

It uses a E48 filter or, when paired with the 12501 hood, a series 7 filter. Note that it is not compatible with the Leica M5 and CL, so please keep that in mind.

The lens shows minimal signs from attach and off the hood attachment at the front and very slight scuffs on the aperture ring. Overall, it remains in excellent condition. The black paint on the stopper is still intact, and the 12501 hood is also in great shape.

In February 2025, the lens underwent a full overhaul, including a focus adjustment. Thanks to careful maintenance, the aperture and helicoid rings operate smoothly, and the rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned.

The lens has some minor coating wear on the front and rear elements, and a very slight balsam separation on the edge of middle element. However, these do not affect the image quality in any noticeable way. The test shots were excellent, with the focus sharp and precise. From wide open, it delivers exceptional sharpness and resolution, showcasing the true performance of the first-generation Elmarit.

Included with the lens are the 12501 hood, series 7 filter, genuine rear cap, and a third-party hood cap.
