Nikkor S 50mm f1.4 late type. Nikon S mount. Black barrel. Serial number is in the 370000 range.
Its roots lie in the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5 for Contax. Optical design is 3 groups and 7 elements. Filter size is 43mm. This black-barrel version is lighter than the earlier 50mm f1.4, weighing only 143 g in actual measurement.
Many photographers enjoy using this lens on Leica bodies or mirrorless cameras via an adapter. Wide open it delivers a gentle, soft, and delicate rendering, while stopping down about three stops transforms it into a sharply defined performer.
A classic vintage lens that can be enjoyed at a reasonable price.
There is a faint loss of black paint on the aperture ring, but the rest of the exterior is quite clean. The smooth, semi-gloss finish of the black paint can be fully appreciated.
All functions operate properly. The aperture ring clicks with a pleasant, precise feel, and there are no scratches or oil on the aperture blades.
The glass shows a slight separation along the edge of the rear group, a common issue with this lens, but it has virtually no effect on actual images. No cleaning marks or haze are visible, and the glass is clear and crisp. You can enjoy the lens’s original rendering.
Sample photos have been uploaded to the Sample Gallery. Near maximum aperture, you will see a delicate, soft rendering with a hint of flare. Please have a look at the gallery.
