This renowned lens employed newly developed glass and earned high praise for its outstanding optical performance. At the time of its release, it was the fastest wide-angle lens in the world. Later, lenses such as the Canon 35mm f1.5 and Summilux 35mm f1.4 were introduced, pushing the trend of fast wide-angle lenses even further. The design was by Hideo Azuma, who was responsible for many Nikon S-mount and Leica L-mount lenses.
This particular lens bears the serial number 359xxx, placing it in the later production period of the Nikkor 35mm f1.8. The C after W-Nikkor is omitted from the nameplate, indicating a production date around 1961–1962. Later batches like this feature more modern engravings and design elements.
With its precise rendering and gentle bokeh, this lens offers a calm and atmospheric image quality. Its character has captivated many photographers, and even the manager of our test gallery gives it a wholehearted recommendation.
The item shows very minimal signs of use and boasts a beautiful overall appearance. The glass condition matches the exterior—clean and clear.
It underwent a complete overhaul in July 2025. Thanks to the meticulous servicing, the operation of the aperture ring, helicoid, and other controls is now exceptionally smooth. There are extremely minor signs of coating wear on the front and inner elements, but these have virtually no impact on actual image quality. The glass is clear, free from any noticeable scratches or haze.
Please note that the rear element guard interferes with Leica camera bodies internally, making it incompatible even when using an adapter. However, it can be used without issue on mirrorless cameras such as the Sony α7 series, Nikon Z series, and Leica SL.
Comes with an original front cap and a third-party rear cap.
