W-Nikkor-C 25mm f/4, Early Type – For Nikon S Released following the Contax-mount Topogon 25mm f/4, this lens debuted in 1953 and, at the time, boasted the world's widest angle of view for a 35mm format camera.
Its optical construction follows the Topogon type: four elements in four groups, symmetrically arranged with meniscus lenses. It shows no noticeable distortion, and at maximum aperture, it delivers clear images with a pleasing softness. Compared to the Topogon, it offers noticeably sharper rendering.
Notably, this Nikkor 25mm f/4 is the only interchangeable lens for the Nikon S system that focuses using only the body’s helicoid mechanism.
This early version with chrome finish has a notably hefty feel compared to the later model, weighing in at 133g on its own. When mounted on any Nikon S-type body—especially black paint versions—with a matching viewfinder and hood, the aesthetics are outstanding. Just looking at it is a pleasure.
It’s said that only around 300 units were ever produced for the Nikon S mount, combining both early and late versions—making this a truly rare piece.
The lens, hood, and viewfinder show only minimal signs of use and are in excellent condition overall. The included front cap shows some signs of use.
All functions operate properly, and the aperture and focusing helicoid have a smooth and pleasant feel.
Under a loupe, one or two extremely fine cleaning marks can be seen on the lens, but they are barely noticeable and should have no impact on image quality. There is no haze present.
Includes the rare dedicated hood and viewfinder, genuine front cap, and a non-original rear cap.
