This is the later version of the W-Nikkor 25mm f/4, a wide-angle lens made by Nippon Kogaku for the Nikon S-series rangefinder cameras. Introduced in 1953 following the Contax-mount Topogon 25mm f/4, it held the title of the widest-angle lens available for 35mm format cameras at the time of its release.
The optical formula follows the classic Topogon-type design: 4 elements in 4 groups, symmetrically arranged with meniscus elements. It exhibits virtually no distortion and delivers a clear image with a pleasant softness when shot wide open—noticeably sharper in rendering than the Topogon itself.
Notably, the Nikkor 25mm f/4 is the only lens in the Nikon S-mount lineup that relies solely on the camera body’s helicoid for focusing.
This later version features a black paint finish and is significantly lighter than the earlier model—another welcome improvement. The lens alone weighs just 73 grams, roughly half the weight of the earlier version.
When mounted with a finder and hood on any Nikon S-series body—especially a black-paint model—the visual appeal is outstanding. It’s the kind of setup that’s simply a pleasure to admire.
It’s estimated that only around 300 units of this lens were ever produced in Nikon S-mount, including both early and late versions. A true rarity—especially with the original cap and dedicated hood, which are extremely hard to find.
There are some minor scuffs, but no noticeable scratches—overall, the lens is in very clean condition. The beautiful semi-gloss black paint finish remains intact and well-preserved.
Fully overhauled in May 2025. All mechanical operations are smooth and responsive. The aperture blades have been carefully cleaned and are in excellent condition.
The glass shows a fair number of cleaning marks on both the front and rear elements. These may cause some effect under strong backlighting, but in normal test shooting, no noticeable impact was observed.
The viewfinder shows minimal signs of use, with clean glass and a clear, bright view.
Included is a rare two-piece dedicated hood that allows Series VII filters to be inserted between the sections. Also included is a storage case for the lens, hood, and finder (note: the leather strap on the clasp is broken). Although the serial number does not match, the original box is also included.
A great piece for both practical use and collection.
