The Triplet Elmar 90mm f4 is an exceptionally rare Leica L-mount lens. Leitz designated this model with the product code 11730U. This particular example has a serial number in the 1.91 million range and was manufactured in 1962. The optical construction consists of three elements in three groups, and the filter size is E39.
Although the maximum aperture is f4, making it slightly slower than some alternatives, the lens itself is remarkably lightweight, weighing just 203g. This makes it an extremely portable and versatile medium telephoto option. Known for its high resolution and razor-sharp rendering. Its clarity and natural color reproduction are standout characteristics. The helicoid is positioned for easy operation, making it a highly user-friendly lens. Compatible lens hoods include IUFOO or 12575.
By the time this three-element Elmar was introduced in 1962, production of the last Barnack Leica, the IIIg, had already ceased in 1960. As a result, nearly all units of this lens were produced in M-mount, with only 543 units ever made in Leica screw mount. This makes it an exceptionally rare collector’s piece.
The knurled section of the helicoid ring and its surrounding area show only very minor scuffing, but overall, the lens remains in excellent cosmetic condition. Holding it in hand, one can truly appreciate the outstanding quality of Leica’s golden era. The base grip covering has been replaced in recent years, yet it blends in seamlessly, maintaining the lens’s classic aesthetic.
In March 2025, the lens underwent a full overhaul, ensuring that every component operates flawlessly. The aperture and helicoid movement are exceptionally smooth, offering a refined and effortless handling experience. The rangefinder coupling is perfectly calibrated, making precise focusing a breeze.
The optics are in superb condition, free from noticeable cleaning marks or haze. The glass is crystal clear, and the original coatings remain beautifully intact, preserving the lens’s true imaging character. This is a Triplet Elmar at its finest, ready to deliver its signature rendering.
