※About rarity

Early Elmar 5cm f/3.5 – Chrome Finish Helicoid number: 7. Distance scale in meters. This is the short-barrel type with an extremely compact collapsible design—so short you’ll find yourself double-checking whether you forgot to pull out the lens!
Features a half-rotation helicoid. Leitz product code: ELMAR.

This is an early Elmar manufactured using optical glass from C.P. Goerz, originally mounted on Leica Model A cameras from the 1920s.
The lens has been officially converted by Leitz in later years to a Leica screw mount version with rangefinder coupling.

As part of the conversion, the aperture scale was updated to the international standard (f/3.5, 4, etc.), making it easier to use.
With a chrome barrel, international aperture markings, and metric scale, this is a dream configuration for collectors and enthusiasts.

The lens name ring features a matte chrome finish similar to that of the Red Elmar, while the mount base with distance markings is in shiny chrome.
Since similar barrel types existed even before the Red Elmar appeared, this conversion likely took place around 1950 at Leitz.

Compatible hoods include the FISON and our store’s original FB-07 hood designed for the Elmar 50mm.

There are some scuff marks on the collapsible barrel, but the chrome plating retains its shine, and overall, the lens is in remarkably clean condition. No noticeable scratches or dings are present.
Even though it underwent an official Leitz conversion at some point, the condition does not reflect the fact that it’s been over 90 years since the lens was originally manufactured.

Fully overhauled in March 2025.
The feel of the aperture and helicoid operation is on a completely different level from typical Elmars—exceptionally smooth.
The interior of the barrel, including the internal baffles, has been carefully refinished with matte black lacquer to suppress internal reflections, promising a more contrasty rendering.

The front element shows only a couple of very fine cleaning marks, visible only under a loupe. Other than that, the glass is clear and free of haze—offering that crisp, classic rendering unique to the earliest Elmars.
