Leica DII, Chrome Finish, manufactured in 1937/38.
Leitz product code: AIROOCHROM. Interestingly, the code for the body and lens set is ABOOTCHROM—quite a cool name. For reference, the black DII body was designated LYKAN until 1934, and AIROO from 1934 to 1948—quite a complex system! (lol)
The Leica DII debuted in 1932 as Leica’s first camera with a coupled rangefinder, making it a groundbreaking model. Initially available only in black paint, the chrome version was introduced in 1933 following advancements in plating technology.
Features such as slow shutter speeds, diopter adjustment, and strap lugs would later appear in the DIII. However, the DII’s simplicity and compact size provide an excellent grip. The 1:1 magnification rangefinder makes focusing easy, making it an outstanding choice for practical use.
Most Leica DII Chrome units show heavy signs of use, but this one retains a youthful satin chrome shine, maintaining a fresh and elegant appearance.
There is a very faint scuff mark visible under certain lighting beneath the D.R.P. engraving on the top cover. The bottom plate has some minor scratches, and there are signs of use around the tripod mount, but overall, the camera shows little wear and remains in excellent condition.
Overhauled in February 2025, the film advance mechanism and shutter release have been finely tuned for a smooth and satisfying operation.
The viewfinder provides a clear and bright image, with strong contrast in the rangefinder patch for precise focusing.
Even after nearly 90 years since its manufacture, the chrome finish retains its beautiful luster. A superb piece, perfect for both use and collection.
