10402. A Leica M4 Black Chrome, made in Germany in 1974. Featuring a sharp black chrome finish, the M4 was born as the successor to the M3 and M2, and remains popular among enthusiasts today for its overall usability.
It is equipped with bright frames for 35/50/90/135mm lenses. The film winding crank is positioned to avoid interference with the Leica meter, a design that has been carried through to the M6 and M7.
Without the exposure meter found in the M5 and later models, the M4 is appreciated for its simple, compact structure, free of breakdowns. The black chrome body pairs effortlessly with not only black lenses but also chrome lenses.
The operation is exceptional—this M4 is impressively smooth, a remarkable example of its kind.
The exterior shows some wear around the strap lug area, bottom cover, and rewind crank, as well as a small, almost imperceptible mark near the top of the front viewfinder’s large window.
Before the previous owner’s acquisition, the camera underwent a very thorough overhaul. The operation is remarkably smooth for an M4, and you will immediately notice the difference as soon as you wind the film.
For this resale, the viewfinder was cleaned in January 2025. Both the viewfinder and bright frame are extremely clear. There is no balsam separation in the viewfinder.
With its exceptionally smooth operation, this Leica M4 is highly motivating to use. It’s an ideal example of a M4 to be put to good use and enjoy thoroughly.
