Leica M4 Motor, Black Paint. Serial number in the 1,200,000 range. One of only 140 units shipped in December 1968. This is an original M4-M engraving, not the later M4 MOT model.
The body’s base, revealed by opening the bottom cover, features electrical contacts designed to interface with the dedicated motor drive manufactured by Leitz New York. The combined production of the M4-M and the later M4 MOT models totals a mere 904 units, making this a rare find. The included bottom cover is a standard black paint version.
While black-painted Leica M3 and M2 bodies pair beautifully with black lenses, the M4 in black paint is equally well-suited to chrome-barreled lenses such as the steel-rim Summicron or the 8-element version. With bright-line frames for 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 135mm focal lengths, this camera is as practical as it is collectible. A true rarity.
The advance lever, the surrounding area of the top cover, the film rewind crank lever, and the edges of the bottom cover show minor paint wear, but overall, the original black paint remains in remarkably beautiful condition.
The camera underwent a full overhaul (OH) during its previous sale in 2019. To ensure optimal performance for its current resale, it received another comprehensive overhaul in December 2024. All operations are smooth and refined, with an excellent tactile feel. The viewfinder is clear and provides superb visibility.
This camera is an outstanding choice for both practical use and collection. Comes with the original body cap.
