The Summicron 50mm f2, 1st generation, is the popular fixed barrel version of the later model, designed for the Leica M-mount. The product code from Leica is SOSIC, later changing to 11818. This particular lens, with a serial number in the 1,950,000 range, was manufactured in 1962. The lens features both feet and meter markings, and it is built with a 6-group, 7-element design, known for its sharpness and its distinctive air lens quality, a result of Leica's unique engineering.
The build quality of this lens is often described as a perfect example of functional beauty. The knurled focusing ring not only provides smooth operation but also contributes to the lens's elegant appearance.
It delivers high contrast and consistent performance from wide open, making it a highly sought-after lens that remains popular to this day. Its timeless design complements various Leica cameras, from the M3 and M2 to even modern digital Leica bodies. The lens looks fantastic on both white and black paint or black chrome bodies, further cementing its status as a versatile, classic design.
The lens uses an E39 filter size, and compatible hoods include the IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.
There is a small scratch near the 25-feet distance mark and a few light scratches on the barrel, but overall, the lens shows minimal signs of use. This lens was fully overhauled in 2019, and it remains in excellent condition.
The aperture ring has a clear click feel but still moves smoothly, and the focusing ring moves smoothly with a pleasant, refined motion, providing an exceptional, distraction-free shooting experience.
The glass is in outstanding condition, with no cleaning marks or haze, and it delivers wonderfully clear images. Finding a Summicron 50mm with such pristine glass in recent years is becoming increasingly rare.
