The Summilux 50mm f1.4 with a white barrel, second generation. Product code: SOOME, later updated to 11114. Serial number in the 1,940,000 range, manufactured in 1962. Among Leica lenses, it boasts one of the most elegant designs.
Summilux lenses with serial numbers starting from 1,844,001 retain the same external appearance as the first generation but feature an updated optical design, making them the second generation. While the lens structure remains 5 groups and 7 elements, the redesign delivers sharper and more refined rendering, particularly at wide apertures.
The soft and unique rendering of the first generation has its own charm, but the second generation has gained many fans for its distinctively sharp and well-defined characteristics at maximum aperture. This makes it an incredibly versatile lens that fully allows one to enjoy its expressive performance at wide apertures.
The filter size is E43, and the compatible hoods include XOOIM, 12521G, and 12586.
There is a minor repair mark on the front edge of the barrel (which does not affect filter attachment), and very slight wear on the helicoid and base, but overall, the lens shows minimal signs of use and retains the elegant appearance befitting its nickname.
Fully overhauled in November 2024, including rangefinder coupling adjustment. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the aperture ring and helicoid now offer excellent operational feel. The rangefinder coupling is perfectly calibrated, and focus accuracy is spot-on.
Under strong LED light, only minimal coating deterioration becomes faintly visible, but it has no noticeable impact on image quality. There are no cleaning marks, and the glass condition is excellent.
Test shooting results are outstanding, making this lens highly suitable for practical use.
