A rare find, the all-black Hektor 73mm f1.9. Leica's product code is HEKON, with a serial number in the 140,000 range. According to serial records, this piece was manufactured in 1932, although data suggests that all-black Hektor 7.3cm units may have been produced in 1933/1934.
The Hektor 73mm initially came as a non-rangefinder-coupled version, then evolved into a rotating helicoid with rangefinder coupling. This all-black version features a straight helicoid, adapted for Agfacolor photography accessories, before eventually returning to a rotating helicoid configuration. Likely, issues with rangefinder accuracy led to these design changes for such a large-aperture mid-telephoto lens.
This example has a straight helicoid, meter distance scale, and rangefinder coupling. Compatible filters include 43mm slip-on or 39mm screw-in types. The rangefinder coupling is outstanding on this unit, leaving a lasting impression on our staff from six years ago, when we first handled this memorable piece.
An item we’ve previously sold at our shop. It was carefully used by the customer and has returned to us once more, marking its 5th sale(amazing!). We hope that someday, the next owner may also bring it back to us (haha).
The semi-gloss black-painted barrel shows natural wear on areas that are frequently touched. There are no dents or dings. The wear on the hood and caps matches perfectly with the rest of the lens, giving the impression it’s been well cared for.
It underwent a complete overhaul, including focus adjustment, in 2018. Additionally, we performed another overhaul on the lens during its last sale (earlier this year), so it’s in excellent condition.
The front element shows minor scuffs and slight yellowing, while the middle element has three to four tiny spots of fungus residue, but for a Hektor, the glass is exceptionally clean. There are no signs of balsam separation or haze, and the glass is remarkably clear, which is evident in actual shooting. Rangefinder accuracy at full aperture is outstanding, capturing delicate, fine lines within a soft veil.
Test shots have been very successful. While they date from 2018, please feel free to check our test gallery for examples. The pairing with a CCD monochrome sensor creates a beautiful look. Complete with original hood, caps, and box, this all-black version is truly a rare find!
