Nickel Elmar 35mm f3.5 This is an early Heavy Cam model, with the Leitz product code EKURZKUP. It is a non-numbered (no serial number) lens with a nickel-plated barrel and is non-coated. The distance scale is in meters.
Known as the Heavy Cam in Japan and the Snail Cam (due to the thick, slanted coupling cam) internationally, this design is characteristic of early Elmar 35mm lenses and was produced around 1930.
It features a full rotation (360-degree) helicoid. The compatible original hoods include the FLQOO or FOOKH models, and our FB-07 Elmar 50mm hood also fits this lens.
This particular lens has been modified by a repair technician, with the infinity lock pin fixed to avoid protruding, ensuring compatibility with Leica M cameras (including digital models) without interference from L/M adapters. If desired, we can return it to its original configuration.
There are two minor dents on the base of the lens barrel, but they do not affect mounting or focus operation. Additionally, there is some wear on the matte finish around half of the lens barrel, though this is typical for an early nickel Elmar and still in good condition. Despite being over 90 years old, this lens remains very much functional and exudes a sense of character.
It has undergone a full overhaul in November 2024. The aperture and focus ring movements are very smooth. The internal matte lacquer coating, which helps reduce internal reflections, has been carefully re-applied, promising a tighter rendering with improved contrast.
On our in-store Leica M10-P demo model, there may be a slight misalignment of the infinity focus with certain L/M adapters, where the double image is barely noticeable, but this does not affect practical use.
The lens has a few very fine cleaning marks on the front element, but these should not affect image quality. There is no fogging, and the glass condition is quite good for an early Elmar.
The lens comes with its original Bakelite front cap, a slightly worn metal rear cap, and the original box. This is a rare and collectible item.
