Originally released in 1969 for the Leica R-system, it began as a 2-cam mount lens but transitioned to the 3-cam system with the introduction of the Leica R3.
This lens was manufactured by Schneider as an OEM for Leica and was the first retrofocus lens used in Leica's R system. With 10 elements in 8groups design, the Super-Angulon-R was engineered to offer minimal distortion, high resolution, and less vignetting, resulting in superior image quality. The lens also benefits from advanced correction techniques using multiple elements to enhance sharpness and control optical aberrations.

The lens shows only minor paint loss along the edge of the helicoid, but overall, it remains in excellent cosmetic condition with minimal signs of use. A full overhaul was completed in November 2024, ensuring smooth operation. The previously loose helicoid now feels perfectly calibrated with a satisfying torque, and the aperture ring moves fluidly with just the right amount of resistance.
The lens exhibits a slight coating damage on the front element, but there are no noticeable cleaning marks, fogging, or other significant defects. The glass is clear and sharp, delivering excellent image quality as confirmed by test shots. The lens comes with its original front and rear caps.
