※About rarity

The Plaubel Makina IIIR, made by the German company Plaubel, was introduced in 1956 as the final model in the Makina series, which began in 1920. This version features a Compur-Rapid shutter and has long been a favorite among collectors.

The Type III is an interchangeable lens model, with options such as the Orthar 73mm f/6.8 and Tele-Makinar 190mm f/4.8. Rangefinder coupling is available only with the standard lens.

While the Makina IIIR typically comes with either an Anticomar 100mm f/2.9 or f/4.2, this particular unit is fitted with the rarer f/3.5 version. The Anticomar 100mm f/3.5 is believed to have been produced in small quantities for military or aerial photography applications, suggesting that this lens may have been repurposed or modified for use with this camera. That said, the fit is seamless and shows no signs of mismatch.

Interestingly, the aperture ring is engraved with f/2.9, but the aperture blades begin to move from the f/3.5 position—so there are no issues in practical use. Rangefinder coupling has been confirmed via ground glass focusing.

The camera uses 120 film, and notably comes with two automatic roll film backs for 6x6 and 6x9 formats—a very welcome bonus.

The camera’s unique loading mechanism, which doesn’t rely on a start mark, along with its lens-specific handling quirks, can make it confusing for unfamiliar users. To assist, we’re including a photocopy of the relevant pages from Classic Camera Senka issue No. 65 as a reference guide.

The chrome finish is relatively well-preserved, and overall the camera is in good cosmetic condition. On the grip section, which is engraved with Makina IIIR, there are two small holes that appear to have been drilled to attach some kind of accessory. It is said that press photographers of the era often mounted flash guns in place of the grip—perhaps these holes are evidence of that history. It's a detail that sparks the imagination.

The camera was inspected and serviced by a specialist in May 2025. Light seal repairs, lens cleaning, and adjustments to the viewfinder and rangefinder were carried out, ensuring it’s ready for confident use.

There is slight coating deterioration on the inner lens element, but it should have little to no impact on image quality. There is no haze or cleaning marks.

Includes two roll film backs and a front cap engraved with Plaubel’s charming logo.
