The Canon 50mm f0.95 was unveiled at Photokina in 1960, instantly earning worldwide acclaim as Canon's ultra-fast lens.
Released in 1961, it followed the intense domestic competition of fast lenses in the 1950s, including the Zunow 50mm f1.1, Nikkor 50mm f1.1, Fujinon 50mm f1.2, Hexanon 60mm f1.2, and Canon 50mm f1.2. This lens, also known as the "Dream Lens," features a construction of 7 elements in 5 groups, utilizing five pieces of newly developed glass.
Originally designed for the Canon 7/7s with a proprietary bayonet mount, this particular unit has been converted to Leica M-mount. It has a filter thread size of 72mm.
At wide apertures of f0.95 to f1.4, it delivers a distinctively soft and dreamy rendering, while stopping down to f2 and beyond significantly enhances resolution and sharpness, transforming its image quality. This shift makes it an exceptionally enjoyable lens for photography.
Please note that the rear element slightly protrudes beyond the mount surface, so handle it with care.
The lens exterior is in exceptionally beautiful condition, with hardly any signs of use.
In December 2024, the lens underwent a full overhaul (OH) and was simultaneously converted to Leica M-mount. The aperture and helicoid rings, which can often become stiff, offer a smooth operation with an ideal level of torque, providing a pleasingly refined feel.
The stunning exterior is complemented by pristine optics—there are no cleaning marks or haze, and the glass is crystal clear, offering exceptional clarity. It would be rare to find another lens in this outstanding optical condition.
Rangefinder coupling shows a very slight front focus near the closest focusing distance up to around 2m. However, stopping down by just half a stop allows you to fully enjoy the soft, atmospheric rendering for which this lens is renowned.
Test shots show excellent results. We invite you to view the sample gallery, where all images were taken near wide-open apertures. This lens is a true gem, offering dreamy and ethereal rendering.
The lens comes with its original 72mm UV filter and front cap.
