A chrome-barrel Elmar 50mm f3.5 lens, with Leica's product code ELMAR.
Serial number in the 830,000 range, manufactured in 1950. This model predates the introduction of the Red Elmar and features distance markings in meters. It is a coated lens with a 4-element, 3-group design.
The Elmar, which has been in production since the 1920s, reached a mature stage post-war with the addition of coating. While this lens was produced in large quantities and is commonly found, selecting a well-preserved example offers the exceptional performance expected of Leica's standard lens.
The filter size is A36, compatible with clip-on FIOLA filters. The original lens hood is the FISON, which, like the Elmar, was produced for a long period and is available in various versions.
With its outstanding compactness and reliable optical performance, the Elmar remains a go-to lens for Leica users, cherished for its timeless appeal and enduring reputation as a classic.
There are light scuffs from regular use across the lens, along with some noticeable chrome peeling on the collapsible section. However, the rest of the barrel is in relatively good condition, with no dents or dings.
The lens underwent a full overhaul in December 2024. The aperture mechanism and helicoid feel exceptionally smooth and well-refined. Rangefinder coupling has been verified, and focus alignment is precise. The interior anti-reflective matte lacquer has been carefully reapplied, promising crisp, controlled rendering.
While the front and rear elements exhibit minor cleaning marks and slight coating wear, these do not impact image quality. Results from test shots were excellent, showcasing sharp and vibrant rendering. This is an ideal lens to take along for city walks, hikes, or travel without worry.
Comes with the original front cap.
