Leica IIIf Red Dial with Leica Vit SYOOM rapid winder set. Serial number in the 770,000 range, manufactured in 1955. This example was made by Leitz Canada. Product code is LOOHN. This IIIf dates from the period when the Leica M3 had just been introduced and both models were sold side by side.
The Leica IIIf was introduced in 1950 as the successor to the Leica IIIc. Early versions lacked a self-timer and featured black synchronization speed markings, commonly referred to as the Black Dial. It later evolved into the Red Dial version seen here. This example is the final type, with the self-timer added from 1954 onward.
The IIIf is a highly refined model and remained in production for eight years, from 1950 until the introduction of the IIIg in 1957. It is the best-selling Barnack Leica and boasts the highest production numbers. Thanks to its ease of use, high reliability, and ample availability, prices remain relatively approachable, making it an excellent choice as an entry-level Leica.
This set includes the Leica Vit SYOOM rapid winder, compatible with the IIIf and IIIg. By pulling the trigger, the film can be advanced quickly and smoothly, far faster than using the camera’s standard winding knob. It allows you to keep your eye on the finder while waiting for the decisive moment. In addition to its excellent looks, it also improves handling, making it a truly attractive and practical accessory.
Overall, it shows heavy signs of use. There are scuff marks on the top of the top cover, a slight tilt to both strap lugs (with no effect on use), and scuffing on the corners of the top cover around the strap lugs. The Leica Levit is also heavily worn overall, with some minor dents. It is a condition you can use hard without hesitation.
In December 2025, the body and Levit were fully overhauled together. Operation is very smooth, and the viewfinder is crisp and clear. The Levit has been optimized for this specific body, and winding with the Levit is light and effortless.
