Early Elmar 5cm f3.5 with nickel finish. Helicoid number: 3. Distance scale in meters. Features the short barrel design with a fully rotating helicoid. Leitz product code: ELMAR.
This is an early Elmar manufactured using optical glass from C.P. Goerz, originally mounted on the Leica Model A from the 1920s. This particular unit was later officially converted by Leitz to a Leica screw mount with rangefinder coupling. Compatible with the FISON hood or our original FB-07 hood designed for the Elmar 50mm.
The nameplate shows no distortion, and wear on the collapsible barrel is minimal, making it a remarkably well-preserved example for an early Elmar. Even considering the later Leitz modification, the lens remains in good external condition for an item over 90 years old.
Fully overhauled in November 2024. The aperture and helicoid operate with a smoothness that surpasses most Elmars, ensuring effortless handling. Rangefinder coupling is also precise.
The front element shows natural aging, with noticeable yellowing and numerous fine cleaning marks across its surface. While the glass condition reflects its age, actual test results were excellent.
Under shooting conditions involving strong light sources, there may be slight contrast loss. However, the lens delivers a rendering with impressive dimensionality. Please visit our test gallery to see sample images, all shot wide open without a hood.
Includes the original Bakelite front cap.
