Elmar 50mm f3.5, Nickel Barrel. Leitz product code: ELMAR. Manufactured in 1930, with a serial number in the 90,000 range. This is the new Elmar 5cm with helicoid number 5. Uncoated. The distance scale is in meters, and the aperture uses continental-style markings.
The helicoid is of the full-circle type, but this particular example has been modified by a repair professional to ensure the infinity lock pin does not protrude, allowing it to be used without interference with the L/M adapter. It works seamlessly with Leica M and digital Leica M models (though it can be restored to its original state upon request).
This lens represents the foundation of Leica’s reputation, the standard lens that helped cement their legacy.
Even after more than 90 years, this old lens remains timeless, and the quality of Leitz craftsmanship continues to impress, still performing admirably. It's a fantastic companion for cameras ranging from Barnack to M-type and M-type digital, making it an enjoyable choice across generations.
Beyond its stable rendering, the subtle nickel sheen and the lightweight, compact design that modern lenses can't quite match are part of its charm.
It comes with a relatively rare black-painted original front cap with a slight step.
The lens barrel shows minor scuffing, but it gives the impression of being carefully used, with the nickel plating still shining brightly. There are tiny marks on the edge of the mount base, but they do not affect mounting the lens or shooting in any way.
In January 2025, the lens underwent a full overhaul. The aperture operates smoothly, and the helicoid, now in excellent condition, has a satisfying feel that makes you want to turn it. Rangefinder coupling and focus are perfect.
The glass has a few slight cleaning marks on the front element and some aging haze, but it does not affect the image quality. The anti-reflective matte lacquer on the interior has been carefully reapplied, ensuring sharp and clear rendering.
The real-world test results were excellent. I hope you can take a look at the sample images in the test gallery.
