A limited-edition Leica M4-P, released in 1983 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Ur-Leica. A total of 2,500 units were produced. The commemorative inscription 1913-1983 is engraved on the rear of the top cover as well as on the accompanying winder. Each camera was also given a special serial number, and this example is marked L172.

The M4-P was introduced in 1981 under product code 10416, with all production carried out by Leitz Canada. A bright-line frame for the Summilux-M 75mm f1.4, introduced in 1980, was newly added. As a result, the M4-P became the first Leica M model to adopt the six-frame system still used on current Leica M cameras, with 35/135mm, 50/75mm, and 28/90mm frames displayed in pairs.

This example comes complete with its matching-number original box and documents, special commemorative card and photograph, an Authenticity Certificate bearing the special serial number L172, and the dedicated Leica Winder M4-2. A truly collectible set. It would also make a wonderful birth-year Leica for anyone born in 1983!

It retains wonderfully the atmosphere of a brand-new camera from its era and is truly deserving of being called like new.

In July 2026, it received a full overhaul by a specialist, including replacement of the shutter curtains. The winder was also serviced, including cleaning of the battery compartment, replacement of the cushioning material, and an operational check. All functions operate smoothly, and the viewfinder is clear and bright.

The camera comes with its original box, warranty card, special certificate, a booklet covering the history of 1913-1983, and a double-sided card featuring the famous photograph taken by Oskar Barnack with the Ur-Leica at Eisenmarkt Square in Wetzlar in 1913, together with a photograph of the same location taken in 1983. A strap and body cap are also included.

The winder comes with its original box, warranty card, and supplementary instructions.
