Leica DIII. Serial number in the 300,000 range, manufactured in 1938. Leitz product code is AFOOV. It is also known as the Model F or Leica III internationally.
This unit features a black and chrome-plated finish, often referred to as "semi-chrome" in Japan. It offers a stylishness distinct from the subtlety of the nickel finish, making it particularly appealing.
Following the introduction of this model, chrome-finished cameras quickly became popular among other manufacturers, marking a significant turning point in the era.
With its compact size that fits perfectly in the hand, the DIII is a highly functional Barnack Leica. It features a built-in rangefinder with diopter correction, a slow shutter speed, and a convenient suspension ring. The highest shutter speed is 1/500 second.
Chrome-finished L-mount lenses are more abundant than the nickel-finished ones, offering an enjoyable variety for lens selection. This model has been beloved by enthusiasts for both shooting and display. Even over 90 years after the introduction of the DIII, its charm remains undiminished, and it is still in full working order.
The bottom cover shows many scratches and wear marks, suggesting its extensive use in the past. Additionally, there is a minor dent on the serial number area. Otherwise, there are some signs of general wear throughout, but the paint remains in relatively good condition. Overall, it is in fairly good condition for a DIII.
In November 2024, a full overhaul was performed in preparation for its resale. Additionally, the half-mirror was replaced in 2017. All functions are operating smoothly, with a pleasant shutter sound across both low and high speeds. The viewfinder is clear in both the rangefinder and the focusing patch, with excellent image separation.
This camera is in a condition that allows for comfortable and worry-free use.
