The Legendary Summicron 50mm f2, 1st Generation. This is the fixed barrel, later model. The product code from Leitz is SOSIC, later updated to 11818. It has a serial number in the 2.11 million range, manufactured in 1965. The distance scale is marked in both feet and meters.
The lens construction consists of 6 groups and 7 elements, similar to the earlier collapsible type and the earlier fixed barrel version. However, the helical focusing design has been updated for a more modern look. Its optical performance is outstanding, making it the most popular model among all Summicrons offered in our shop.
The lens delivers high contrast and stable rendering performance even at wide open apertures. Its capabilities rival those of contemporary lenses. The timeless design complements not only classic models like the M3 and M2 but also modern digital Leicas, looking great on both white bodies and black paint or black chrome finishes.
The filter size is E39, and compatible lens hoods include the IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.
Near the infinity lock lever on the helical ring, there is a very slight area of plating wear, but otherwise, the lens shows minimal signs of use and is in excellent condition. A full overhaul was completed in October 2024. The aperture and helical focusing mechanism have a smooth operational feel, with a perfect torque that enhances the shooting experience.
The rangefinder coupling exhibits a very slight front-focus tendency at the closest distances, but stopping down by 1 to 2 stops allows the focus to settle perfectly. There is a faint haze around the periphery of the middle element due to coating wear, which can only be seen under strong LED light and should not significantly affect image quality.
The coating on all surfaces is well-preserved. Test shots have yielded excellent results, with performance on par with other fixed barrel Summicrons. This is an ideal option for those seeking a clean, practical Summicron.
