W-Nikkor C 3.5cm f1.8 An exceptionally rare Leica screw mount version. Featuring a 7-element, 5-group optical design, this lens was the brightest 35mm wide-angle lens in the world when it was released in 1956. While the Nikon S-mount version was produced in significant quantities, the L-mount version is much rarer, with an estimated production of only around 1,500 units.
For enthusiasts of fast 35mm lenses from Leica or non-Leitz brands, this lens inevitably becomes an object of fascination.
Notably, the Nikon S-mount version of the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 cannot be used on Leica bodies even with an adapter, as the rear lens group interferes with the camera's rangefinder roller.
The filter thread is unique to the L-mount version, measuring 43mm, differing from the S-mount version. The lens’s dedicated plastic square hood, made specifically for the L-mount version, is even rarer than the lens itself and is notoriously difficult to find—a highly sought-after accessory.
The aperture ring shows signs of black paint wear from use, and the helicoid has some scuffs and minor scratches, but there are no significant dents or noticeable damage.
The lens has undergone a full overhaul (OH) by the previous owner, ensuring smooth operation of the helicoid and aperture ring. It is free from the rattling often associated with L-mount Nikkors, and the rangefinder coupling is perfectly aligned.
The rear element has a few faint cleaning marks, and minor coating deterioration is visible on the middle elements under strong LED light, but these have virtually no effect on actual photography. The glass is clear, free from haze or fungus, and exhibits excellent transparency.
Practical testing yielded outstanding results. At maximum aperture, the lens delivers sharp images with a soft, veil-like bokeh, creating a gentle and captivating rendering. Please refer to the sample images in the gallery—it’s truly an exceptional lens.
