Summilux 35mm f1.4 1st, commonly known as the Steel Rim. The serial number is in the 1.76 million range. Manufactured in 1960 by Leitz Canada. The product code from Leitz is OCLUX / 11870.
At wide open aperture, this lens displays a beautiful, dreamy bokeh with a veil-like quality, while stopping down reveals sharp, crisp rendering. The images taken at slightly stopped-down apertures also exhibit incredible transparency and three-dimensionality.
While all generations of Summilux lenses have their charm, this 1st model stands out in both style and construction. It looks exceptional when equipped with the dedicated OLLUX hood. This lens has become quite expensive in recent years, and it's easy to see why; it's truly a rare gem.
There are minor scuffs and small scratches on various parts, indicating overall signs of use. However, there are no noticeable dents or dings.
The lens has undergone a full overhaul in October 2024. The operation of the aperture ring and helicoid ring is smooth, and even the infinity stop has been finely tuned for a silky feel. The rangefinder coupling works perfectly as well.
The rear element shows a fair number of coating marks, scuffs, and cleaning scratches, but the front and middle elements are clean, with full coating intact. The real-world test results were favorable. I took it out for some thorough testing, and I did not notice any impact from the rear element damage. The lens exhibits excellent rendering, and it’s easy to understand why it has been well-used.
This is a great option for those who want to enjoy shooting without worry, especially with the Steel Rim design. It comes with a Zumarit-branded E41 UVa filter, our original FB-05 cap for Steel Rim, and a genuine rear cap.
