The Nikon S-series standard lens, the Nikkor-H 50mm f2, was introduced in 1952 by Nippon Kogaku (Nikon). This particular version is quite rare, lacking the typical black filter rim. It features the Nikon S internal bayonet mount and a 3-group, 6-element optical construction. The serial number is 7526xx.
Normally, the Nikkor 50mm f2 comes with a 40.5mm filter rim, but this example does not have one. Its weight is 129g.
This lens is documented in the famous Nikon collector Robert J. Rotoloni's book The Complete Nikon Rangefinder System, where it is referred to as the "Rim-Less 50mm f/2 Nikkor." The mystery behind the existence of a small number of these rim-less lenses remains unexplained.
A rare and collectible piece.
There is some paint loss from use, and the brass is subtly exposed at the tip of the lens barrel. Pairing this lens with a well-worn S2, S3, or SP Black Paint model would create a charming, vintage look.
A full overhaul was completed in November 2024, and the aperture blades now operate smoothly.
The lens has numerous fine cleaning marks on the front element and a slight mold trace on the edge of the rear element. The marks on the front element may have some impact on real-world shooting, particularly in backlighting situations.
