Makro-Kilar 40mm f3.5 E. A macro lens capable of close-ups at a magnification of 1:2. The minimum focusing distance is about 10 cm (about 20 cm from the film plane), allowing for extreme close-ups.
It was manufactured from 1950 to 1958, after which it was succeeded by the f2.8 version. It features a Tessar-type optical design with 4 elements in 3 groups and a standard aperture. The lens weighs an actual 161g, making it lightweight. Made in the Principality of Liechtenstein.
Kilfitt, based in Munich, was the lens manufacturer. They also had a factory in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, a small European country known as a tax haven, and this particular unit was manufactured there.
Heinz Kilfit, the founder of Kilfitt, is also known for designing the 24x24 format Robot and Mecaflex cameras.
Kilfitt was famous for macro lenses and supplied them to Alpa, as well as Exakta and Arriflex. Over time, the company underwent several changes in management, and its name evolved from KAV (Kamerabau-Anstalt-Vaduz) to Heintz Kilfit, Kilfitt, and eventually Zoomar, reflecting its complex history.
There is a single scratch on the aperture ring and some scuffs around the base from use, but overall it shows very little signs of wear and has a remarkably clean appearance. The plating on the helicoid ring is also in beautiful condition.
In October 2024, a full overhaul was performed. The aperture and helicoid have been adjusted to a perfect level of torque, providing a satisfying feel that makes you want to handle it often.
There are a few very light cleaning marks on the inner element, but no haze or fungus is present, and the glass is in clear, excellent condition.
The original plastic case has a broken section where the rear element is inserted and secured. As a result, the lens is loosely held in the case, so please be cautious to avoid accidental drops.
