Kern Aarau Switar 50mm f1.8. A standard lens for the Alpa Arneflex, made in Switzerland. The name of the city where Kern is located, Aarau, is engraved on the nameplate. Between 1951 and 1955, 1,526 units were produced. It features a modified Gauss design with 5 groups and 7 elements. This lens is apochromatic. The minimum focusing distance is approximately 45cm from the front of the lens. It has a 15-blade aperture, and the distance scale is marked in feet.
The lens barrel has an outstanding monochrome design, combining aluminum and black paint. Compared to later models like the Auto-Switar and Macro-Switar, which have shutter release mechanisms, this version is lightweight and compact, weighing just 144g. Even with the hood attached, it weighs only 168g, and the total length from the mount is approximately 57mm, offering a rare compact size. It appears that this lens, including previous Aarau Switar models, uses radioactive glass, as a dosimeter registers a slight response.
There are slight scuffs on the aluminum surface, but no dents or corrosion, leaving the lens barrel in very clean condition.
Fully overhauled in September 2024. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the helicoid, which has a large focusing range, operates very smoothly with an ideal level of torque.
The glass has a few light cleaning marks on the front element and some minor coating wear, but these have virtually no effect on image quality. There is no haze, and the glass is crystal clear. Test shots were also excellent, with sharp details and smooth bokeh, making this an all-around enjoyable lens to use.
Comes with a very clean original Type A hood, along with front and rear caps.
