This new version of the Elmar 50mm, featuring new glass types, is one stop brighter at f2.8 compared to the earlier f3.5 Elmar. The number of aperture blades has increased from the f3.5 version, and the internal anti-reflective treatment from the rear element to the mount has been more meticulously crafted.
At wide open, you can enjoy a soft touch in the rendering. When mounted on a Leica IIIf or IIIg, it will produce outstanding results. Compatible hoods include ITOOY, IROOA, ITDOO, and 12585.
The lens barrel shows almost no wear or mount marks and is in excellent condition. The matte chrome finish is beautifully radiant, and there is minimal wear on the retractable section.
It has been fully overhauled in August 2024. The aperture and helicoid are exceptionally smooth, with the infinity stopper finely adjusted for a smooth feel. The rangefinder coupling is spot-on. The internal anti-reflective matte lacquer has been carefully reapplied, promising tighter image rendering.
There are slight signs of coating wear on the front element, but otherwise, the glass is very clear with no noticeable scratches or fogging. This lens, known as the "cloudy" 50mm Elmar, is exceptionally clean for its type. Combined with its excellent glass condition, the real-world test results were very good.
The original front cap is included.
